Service is a method of learning and the foundation of leadership. Leading starts from service learning.
Service Learning Center is a second-level unit under the Office of Student Affairs. Its main function is to promote basic service learning courses and assist the operation of professional service learning courses in each Department. Core businesses include promoting service learning concepts, handling service learning activities, training service learning teachers and assistants, organizing service learning courses, connecting communities and social services, and more.
The Leadership Development Center is a functional unit under the Office of Student Affairs. It integrates on-campus leadership developing resources to cultivate students' leadership thinking and abilities, develop interpersonal network skills, and build leadership soft power and international mobility.
Center Development History
In 2003, the "Taipei Medical University Student Service Curriculum Implementation Regulation" was newly approved. In 2004, the University implemented a compulsory zero-credit service learning course. With the support of Professor Ta-Liang Chen, the Dean of the Office of Academic Affairs and Director of the General Education Center, Professor Li- Cheng Pan was commissioned to operate.
In 2009, Professor Ching-Chiung Wang from the School of Pharmacy was hired as the director, revised the " Taipei Medical University Student Service Curriculum Implementation Regulation ", added the "Taipei Medical University Student Service Course Implementation Rules", and "Taipei Medical University Service Learning Excellent Student Reward Work Points". The "Student Service Learning Center" was formally established to promote freshman volunteer (basic) service learning courses and assist in the operation of professional (advanced) service courses, making service learning a formal graduation requirement for our students.
In 2010, Professor Tsuei-Min Tsai from the School of Medicine was the Director. She strengthened the relationship between service and learning, organized service learning lectures, promoted the community of service learning teachers, and received subsidies from the North Second District Teaching Alliance.
In 2011, the name was changed to "Service Learning Center". Assistant Professor Chia-Hui Chiu from the General Education Center succeeded as the Director, confirming the Center's positioning on "teaching effectiveness", and moving towards strengthening the teaching effectiveness and lean manpower. In 2017, volunteer service learning was changed to basic service learning, and in 2018, professional service learning was changed to elective.
In 2019, Professor Hsiou-Chu Chou from the School of Medicine and then Yu-Chi Chuang, the Director of extracurricular activities section, served as the Director of the Center. In 2020, Associate Professor Yung-Feng Lin from the School of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology succeeded the position. In addition to continuing the core business, the Center is actively planning professional service learning transformation, internationalization of service learning, and co-organization of the establishment of Leadership Development Center.
